Things I do whenever I install XP on a new PC or when someone asks me to fix their PC.
- AntiVirus
It is absolutely imperative, especially for PCs, that a good AntiVirus software is installed. My recommendation, go for either NOD32 or Kaspersky. Why? Because they have smaller footprints and better scanning abilities. Also a simple A/V should do, don’t go for bloated Internet Protection suites. - Firewall
As far as firewalls go, my philosophy is simple; If you don’t let something in, nothing will go out. As soon as a new PC is up, activate the XP firewall (requires SP2). If it is an older PC, activate anyway but run A/V scans to clean the system. If, however, you want protection for both incoming and outgoing connections, ZoneAlarm is good enough. - Anti Spyware
I’ve read in a lot of places that one Anti Spyware just isn’t enough and that you need more than one. In my experience, if you keep the Firewall up and A/V running you probably wont’ even need these. But just in case have LavaSoft Ad-Aware ready. - Browser
For a safer browsing experience use Firefox or Opera. If you must use IE, get IE7.
But most important of all, educate yourself by asking people who know, what to do and what not to do when going online. Learn to say no to the pop-ups if they occur. Learn where and what to click. Learn to identify actual windows from fake ones. And finally, start reading what it says on the screen. More often than not in the pursuit of the goals, people tend to ignore a lot of warning messages and end up having a messed up PC. READ!!!
Computers are here to stay for a very long time. The quicker we get used to them, the better off we’ll be.
