As you might know, I had earlier decided to create/design my own Wordpress theme and I was hoping to get something done by the end of this year. Now as it turns out, I didn’t exactly have some free time at hand, but I still managed to learn how Wordpress works!
It is simple really, but what I have noticed and in my experience to the better, that most people start off on the wrong foot. Most tutorials that I visited, start off with the layout and later delve into the inner workings of Wordpress. Which in my opinion is probably not the best way forward especially for the design challenged.
Before today, I was following what most people had been doing; get a layout first, then add the necessary code to get WP working. I had made two templates to work with and although they were nothing special, I got stuck after that because I didn’t know how WP worked and what I needed to do in order to see my posts. I downloaded the Sandbox Theme from PlainText.org but even that had me confused for a while.
From my experience so far, I can safely say that the rate with which I learned how WP works, I think my approach will be able to help a lot of people.
So what is my approach? Get WP working first and then add the necessary HTML codes to get the desired layout.
In this series, I’ll first make a simple Pre-Sandbox version which will do nothing but display all the posts and other links and items and then add basic HTML tags to arrive at the Sandbox version. From there on, we will stylize the theme. The Pre-Sandbox version is very important because this is where you find out how everything works before we move to the layout/design part.
More on this later, I have to get ready for class :)
